The online world is filled with connections and business opportunities, but it also attracts individuals, with malicious intent. One very common scam tactic to be wary of is the "Google Voice" scam. This scam is usually targeted at people who simply own an active Google Business profile.

Here's how it plays out

The Setup: Scammers search the web to locate active Google business profiles in various markets.

The Pretense: The scammer pretends to be concerned about fraud. Suggests using a verification code to confirm your identity. This is where things start to seem suspicious.

The Code Request: They promise to send a code to your phone and ask you to share it with them. However, this code is not for verifying your legitimacy. It is a Google Voice verification code.

The Consequence: If you unknowingly provide the code the scammer can use it to set up a Google Voice account linked to your phone number. This gives them access, to two capabilities;

  • Concealment: They can use the Google Voice number to make calls and texts anonymously, potentially continuing their scams on others.
  • Impersonation: In some cases, they might misuse the linked information to attempt further scams or even commit identity theft.

Shielding Yourself

  • Never share verification codes with anyone, regardless of their supposed affiliation. Google will never ask you to share a code received via text message.
  • Be wary of unsolicited requests for personal information. If someone you haven't initiated contact with asks for verification codes or other sensitive details, be cautious and don't provide them.
  • Verify the legitimacy of potential buyers or those claiming to have found your pet. If something seems strange, trust your gut and don't hesitate to end communication.

If you've already fallen victim

  • Report the incident to Google. You can reclaim your phone number by following the steps outlined on Google Support.
  • Consider reporting the scam to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). This helps raise awareness and potentially aids investigations into these fraudulent activities. You can report the scam at https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/).
